Laramie Project Notes


  • Changed the town
  • Defined by the crime
  • Beaten because he was gay
  • Some people don’t want to talk about the incident
  • Following the bible closely 
  • Could be homophobic (probably is)
  • Won’t even associate with homosexuality
  • Most people don’t trust gay people 
  • Trying to make the crime not about all of Laramie
  • Openly gay kid got murdered 
  • He tried to fit in 
  • He wanted to go to the University of Wyoming 
    • Restart his education 
    • Joined the gay and lesbian group on campus 
    • Had a bright future ahead
  • A lot of gay guys had to leave Wyoming 
  • Locals say they are apathetic about homosexuality
  • But they aren’t really
  • Some people think that Matt came onto the straight guys 
  • Townspeople think that it was partially Matt’s fault
  • He allegedly “came onto” the straight guys
  • Ruins the reputation of Laramie
  • Brought reporters to Laramie
  • “Live and let live” 
  • Everyone is defending Laramie and their town 
  • Say there are bad people in every group
  • The murderers pleaded not guilty 
  • Some people think they didn’t do it 
  • Because they were “good people”

Collaborative Reflection (halfway point) Strengths/Weaknesses

One of the strengths of our project right now is that it has a very well developed plot. We have decided what is going to happen when, and in what order these things will take place. This has been true of our project from the beginning, and while our project isn’t very complex with our sequence of events, what happens in each scene, and the emotions of the characters are the more complex aspects of our project. Another one of our group’s strengths is our interaction with each other on stage as characters. We have definitely been working on the dialogue between characters to make it more like what people would say to each other during a conversation. I think the first scene between the “real” Ellie (Helena), and Sophia (Caroline) has definitely come a long way and they have improved a lot on this scene since we started this project. Exercises For the Collaborative

During Monday's session we all took notecards and wrote down a word that reminded us of the Laramie project. On  the other side of the notecard we wrote a quote that someone from the laramie project said, or would be likely to say. Then we got into groups based on which note card spoke to us. From there we made i begin i end scenes that incorporated the word on the notecard. I formed a group with Caroline and we created a scene based on the word frustration. During the scene Caroline showed me something and I just acted like I didn't care about it, this made her frustrated so she started banging on the ground. Next we added another word from a note card and the line that was on the back of that card. Our new word was disappointed and instead of just being apathetic with what Caroline had brought I was now severely disappointed.
